Arsenic has achieved great notoriety because of the toxic properties of its compounds. There has been increasing concern about the possible adverse health effects of exposure to elevated concentrations of arsenic in the natural geochemical environment. In Korea, although the tailings containing high level of arsenic is serious problems because they may act as the contaminant sources, proper management or treatment was not supported to prevent the contamination of the mining areas. Therefore, this research was conducted to find the ways to solve the problems caused by As contamination of tailings. In this study, experiment using dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB), Shewanella putrefaciencs CN32, was conducted to estimate the feasibility of bioleaching process as remediation technique. Arseinc contained in soils (tailings, sediment, and paddy soils) was effectively released when Fe(III) was reduced by the microbial activity. After bioleaching experiment, 88.7 %of in tailings, 70.2 % of in paddy soils were removed. It is confirmed that bioleaching using the mechanism of iron reduction is effective to remediate soil contaminated with As.
