This study investigated applicability of polychlorinated naphthalene (PCN) degradation by mechanochemical (MC) treatment, postulation of PCN degradation pathways and enhancement of PCN degradation by addition of iron powder. A 99.9% of degradation of PCN has been achieved after 1h milling. Moreover, the yield of chloride ions reaches a 91.3% of total chlorine after 3h milling. This indicates that all PCN was broken down into inorganic compounds such as CaCl2 after milling. It is found that PCN degradation progresses via dechlorination / hydrogenate reduction, and dechlorination/ dimerization as well as oxidation and benzene ring cleavage. This experiment, for the first time, clarified that iron powder can be an alternative to CaO as an additive of MC treatment for PCN degradation, potentially leading to development of a more cost-effective high-throughput MC process.
