Indirect heating treatment (IHT) has attracted growing interest as a remediation technology for removing PCDD/Fs from sediment. Many experiments have confirmed the removal efficiency of PCDD/Fs by IHT, however, high energy consumption for heating and cost for treating effluent gas are inevitable in these processes. Therefore, this study has proposed a new cleanup treatment process by using charcoal as a thermal source for IHT to remediate PCDD/Fs-contaminated sediments, since charcoal can be employed as thermal source and adsorbent for reducing organic pollutants in effluent gas. Results indicated that higher than 99.5 percent of PCDD/Fs concentrations and 80 percent of PCDD/Fs TEQ-concentrations were removed from the initial sediment above 650 degree Celsius for minutes (total treatment time: 1 h). The predominant PCDD/Fs (after the treatment) remained in the treated sediment and fly ash. And thermal source and desorption capacity of charcoal was clarified for providing thermal and reducing toxic organic pollutants in the effluent gas.
