To meet the forthcoming stringent environmental regulations and maintain higher efficiency, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle(IGCC) technology can be considered as the alternative to conventional pulverized coal power plant.1 Since 1992 in Korea, IGCC research and development works have being performed by several national institutes and universities. These days the Korea West Power Company is going to build up a 300 MW-size coal IGCC commercial plant by 2015. Kideco subbituminous coal was gasified under the 8 bar and 1450 oC in the bench scale entrained coal gasifier(3 t-coal/day) operating by IAE(Institute for Advanced Engineering). So this paper mainly described some characteristics of Kideco coal ash and slag sampled in the 3t/d bench scale gasification system to get engineering informations for developing basic technologies of coal gasifier. Some characteristics of slag discharged from the above coal gasifier, such as carbon content in slag, XRD analysis of ash and slag, component analyses of ash and slag, shape and cross section analysis of slag using SEM, heavy metal components in slag and extracted water from slag using ICP-OES, were investigated.
