Alternative Solid Waste Management for Putrajaya Malaysia towards Low-Carbon Society

Putrajaya, Malaysia central government city was selected to be a showcase city for "Pioneer Township in Green Technology? through Putrajaya Green City 2025" preliminary study. Under the "3R Putrajaya", two targets were set to achieve the sound material-cycle society towards low-carbon society in 2025. The two targets were to reduce final waste sent to landfill site to half of generated waste in 2025 and reduction of GHG emission from waste management process to half of conventional method. In this study, the entire elements of municipal SWM were estimated including green waste from park and garden, sewage sludge, and construction waste. Two main focus introduced in this study were waste reduction at source through public consumption reduction and implementation of waste recycling treatments. The study results show that both the target is achievable at all combination of waste reduction and treatment scenario options, and with calculation condition of high level law implementation and public participation.
