Basic Analysis of Physico-Chemical Properties and Biotoxicity of Waste Paint Sludge for Biological Recyclability

The waste paint sludge classified as hazardous waste according to the Waste Management Law emits large amounts of the toxic gas (i.e. the phosgene gas, the hydrogen chloride gas, the carbon monoxide gas, the NOx, SOx, and etc.) in process of incineration and causes the environmental contamination. The automobile, electronics, metal parts and timber industry, and etc. are being raised in large amount of sludge during the painting process. Especially, the amount of waste paint sludge from a vehicle in the painting process is more than 3Kg1). Ministry of Environment(south Korea)2 reported that total generation rate of waste paint and waste lacquer sludge was 123,916 ton/year. Rate of the incineration, recycling, and the others of recycling of waste paint and waste lacquer sludge was 59.6%, 39.1% and 1.7%, respectively. More than 92% of total amount is disposed by private contractors and processing cost was about $142/ton. It is estimated that more than $ 10 million annually. To minimize environmental problems and economic loss caused in disposal process, we investigated basic analysis of physico-chemical properties and biotoxicity of waste paint sludge for biological recyclability.
