CO2 laser beam has been applied to cut the high manganese cast steel. Cut width and surface roughness were investigated as functions of cutting speed and laser power. The cut width increases with laser power, but it does not depend on the cutting speed. The narrowest cut width obtained is 0.22 mm under the conditions of laser power of 250 W and cutting speed of 100 mm/min. The roughness of cut surface decreases with decreasing cutting speed. Molten material is ejected completely from the workpiece and does not remain on the cut surface. The laser cutting process does not generate heat affected zone. The hardness of matrix is unchanged (MHV 220∼230) by the laser cutting. CO2 laser cutting is applicable to flash removal from high manganese cast steel.
