The effect of stress triaxiality and matrix microstructure on ductile fracture is examined in ductile cast iron. When failure initiates, the effective plastic strain decreases with increasing stress triaxiality, and further critical void growth rate is only marginally affected by the stress triaxiality. However, graphite appearance ratio on the fracture surface and fracture surface roughness decreases with increasing stress triaxiality. The internal notch effect of graphites appears to be high at lower stress triaxiality. In respect to the matrix microstructure, effective plastic strain, critical void growth rate, graphite appearance ratio and fracture surface roughness in ferritic material are higher than those in ausferritic material at a given triaxiality.
