Effects of surface remelting by arc welding, ion nitriding and carbon content of hardfacing deposited by manual arc welding on the sand erosion resistance in the high chromium white cast irons were studied by measuring the wear loss and by comparing with that of sand erosion resistance of the unidirectionally solidified high chromium white cast irons. Variation in carbon content did not influence sand erosion resistance in the Fe-14.34 mass % Cr-3.59 mass % C-3.10 mass % Ni hardfacing deposit. Wear loss of Fe-14.34 mass % Cr-3.59 mass % C-3.10 mass % Ni hardfacing deposit was almost same to that of commercial stellite Co-32 mass % Cr-12.7 mass % W-1 mass % Si hardfacing deposit. Surface remelting did not improve wear loss in the high chromium white cast irons, while microstructure was refined. Ion nitriding resulted in about 50 % improvement of wear loss in the unidirectionally solidified Fe-25.52 mass % Cr-2.76 mass % C-0.62 mass % Si alloy. This was estimated to be due to the fact that large amounts of nitride compounds were formed on the surface of high chromium white cast irons.
