In order to investigate the influence of trace elements on the microstructure of cast iron, two kinds of high purity Fe-C-Si alloys were prepared by the levitation melting in which the alloys are free from contamination by crucible materials. The alloys prepared from electrolytic irons of 99.995 % and 99.95 % purity showed marked differences in morphology and distribution of the graphite particles and in microstructure of matrices. In the alloy prepared from the electrolytic iron of the higher purity, spheroidal graphite was primarily crystallized from the melt.
