Relation between the solidification behavior of test castings and the positions of their cores with penetration was investigated, the mechanism of penetration on cast iron was analyzed from the viewpoint of the expansion accompanying eutectic solidification. The area of penetration into the core mostly coincided with the closed area of eutectic solidification, and the instant of the occurrence of penetration closely corresponded to the start of eutectic solidification. These results indicate that the increase in the volume of cast iron during eutectic solidification and the consequently increased expansion force in the closed area cause penetration into the core. This kind of penetration can be prevented by opening the closed area of eutectic solidification, as similar to the method of preventing shrinkage. In fact, penetration disappeared after head was put on the test casting. It was confirmed in the practical application of head into penetration defects of camshaft castings, that penetration could be prevented by the head.
