Based on information obtained by experiments, deformation analysis of the casting was performed using a finite element code. Then a new prediction method for the casting deformation was proposed. When the same solidification contraction was input for all meshes in an analysis model, the casting did not show inward deformation. When different solidification contraction with location in the casting was input, the casting showed inward deformation. However in this case, the deformation of the casting increased with an increase in initial mold temperature, which was contrary to the experimental result. Therefore a new criterion to input the solidification contraction according to solidification conditions was necessary to predict the casting deformation. Nondimensional parameters were introduced assuming that solidification contraction varied according to local solidification time. This method was confirmed to be effective in prediction of the casting deformation. Deformation of the casting was completed near the end of solidification, and remained unchanged thereafter. Since the mold was composed of two nonsymmetrical parts, it bent nonsymmetrically and the maximum bending position shifted from the center, which was reflected to the final shape of the casting as a result. This was confirmed by analysis of the casting deformation considering the mold bending.
