Apparent thermal properties and thermal conductivity of various sand molds were obtained by pouring method using cast iron. The apparent thermal properties (apparent thermal diffusivity, apparent thermal conductivity and apparent heat diffusivity) of dry sand molds, furan resin bonded sand molds and phenolic resin bonded sand molds increased in proportion to bulk density. These data corresponded closely to a straight line. The thermal conductivity of these molds took a minimum value between 400°C and 700°C, and increased with the bulk density. Therefore, the apparent thermal properties and thermal conductivity of the sand molds made under the constant condition increased with the sand diameter and the degree of roundness of sand particles, because of an increase of the bulk density. For the same bulk density, compared to the chilling power of the dry sand mold, furan resin bonded sand mold and phenolic resin bonded sand mold, that of the Vacuum Process mold was less, that of the green sand mold was the same and that of the CO2 mold was larger.
