A spiral-form metal mold fluidity test was carried out. The influence of the amount of Zn in binary Al-Zn alloys, the addition of Mg to Al-5%Zn, the addition of such elements as Ti, Zr, Cu, Cr, Mn and Be to Al-5%Zn-2%Mg, casting conditions, grain size, solidification behavior, dendrite morphology and flowing state of fluid was investigated. The fluidity decreases with an increase in alloying and additional elements because of an increase in freezing zone and refining grain size. Individual additions of Ti and Zr to Al-5%Zn-2%Mg especially cause refining equiaxed grains and decreasing fluidity. The fluidity decreases with an increase in strength increase zone obtained by measuring the contraction starting temperature. The fluidity is improved as a dendrite shape factor l/d increases at the strength boundary where l is secondary arm length and d secondary arm spacing. The alloys having small l/d such as alloys containing higher Zn and Mg and Al-5%Zn-2%Mg to which Ti or Zr has been added are lower in fluidity.
