In the inothermal austenizing, the higher the austenitizing temperature and the greater the graphite nodule number, the faster was the austenitizing. Standard curves for isothermal austenitizingwere derived, and by com-paring the experimental data with the standard cuves, D(C1-C2)/C2 which is one of the possible austenitizing rate controlling factors, was obtained, where C1 and C2 denote carbon concentration of austenite in contact with graphite and ferrite respectively and D the diffusion coefficient of cerbon in austenite. The values thus obtained were slightly larger than the results calculated from the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite D, and the data of C1 and C2 in carburizing and Fe-C-Si phase diagram. These slight discrepancies may be attributed to the grain boundary diffusion during austenitizing.
