One of the most prevailing methods of relieving residual stress in castings is stress relief annealing. The authors studied the process of stress relief for 0.35% C-steel, common cast iron and ductile cast iron under a constant strain at a constant temperature in view of a basic experiment for stress relief annealing. The results obtained are as follows : Per cent stress relief does not depend on the value of the initial stress, but depends on the annealing temperature and time. That is to say, the validity of the equation of Rominsky-Taylor for steel casting specimen is fully confirmed for the specimens above mentioned. The equation is σ⁄(σi)=−b log t⁄(t0) where σi is the initial stress, σ the remained stress at the annealing time t, b and t0 are the constants depending on the annealing temperature. For 0.35% C-steel the values of b and t0 are respectively : 0.205, 50,000 min. at 500°C, 0.244, 4,000 min. at 600°C, 0.270, 150 min. at 700°C. For common cast iron the values of b and t0 are respectively : 0.216, 50,000 min. at 500°C, 0.240, 3,800 min. at 550°C, 0.270, 300 min. at 600°C. For ductile cast iron the values of b and t0 are respectively : 0.228, 34,000 min. at 450°C, 0.302, 3,400 min. at 500°C, 0.327, 230 min. at 550°C. Therefore, it may be concluded that once these values of b and t0 are acquainted by this method, the annealing temperature and time to relieve the residual stress to an expected amount will be determined successfully with great ease.
