The practical effects of calcium on the high carbon molten iron were studied by using calcium silicide as the calcium agent. Above 1500°C, the effects of calcium were scarecely shown by adding calcium silicide grains to the surface of the molten iron. Addition with stirring, however, takes effect and some nodular graphites deposited upon addition of over 10% calcium silicide. At 1400 to 1440°C, the addition of calcium silicide in several parts has been made with the result even under air. In various grains the size of calcium silicide, 8"∼10" was most effective. However, addition of over 6% calcium silicide was needed to obtain a nodular graphite structure. Upon addition of calcium silicide jointly with calcium flouride, the amount of the alloy added was approximately reduced to a half. In this case, the smaller the grain size of the alloy, the more effective the addition of the mixture. For example, by adding 2% calcium silicide under 50" together with 1% calcium flouride many graphites in the castings were spheroidized.
