Presented here is the outline of the development of a new solid propellant rocket, TR-IA. This rocket performs a part of the space utilization activities in the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), carrying payload up to 750 kg for microgravity experiments. As it has the single-stage configuration with the existing solid rocket booster, a new control system with canards is introduced to maintain a higher flight path, which keeps 6 minutes of microgravity period. Also some amount of effort has been made in the development of the recovery system, because the body to be recovered is several times heavier than the predecessors in Japan. The payload section has the watertight portion, and the experiment instruments as well as the rocket electronics are to be recovered and reused. TR-IA has such a challenging character, and is expected to be an effective means of space experiments.
