Practice-led research has recently been advocated in art and design academia internationally. This study aims to promote graduate students capacity to conduct design practice-led research. We aimed to understand the learning situations and problems in conducting design practice-led research of 6 graduate students using the FTCF model, to find solutions for enhancing the students learning, and to examine the improvement and effectiveness of the instruction. Using action research, the first cycle indicated 2 problematic aspects: the linguistic components and research methods, and the use of the FTCF model. The solutions were focused on the learning difficulties in the 2 categories. The second cycle showed that the students competency regarding the 2 aspects clearly improved. The effectiveness of the methods is analyzed and discussed. Finally, we provide suggestions regarding directions for further research.
