The embrittlement of austempered ductile cast iron precipitated ferrite around graphite (α-ADI) and conventional austempered ductile iron (ADI) in hydrogen prepared electrolytically was investigated. The tensile strength and elongation of ADI decreased markedly with the increase in tension in hydrogen charge. The tensile strength and elongation were recovered by baking at 373 K for 36 ks. The tensile strength and elongation of α-ADI were not decreased by hydrogen charge. In ADI, small cracks appeared in parallel around the fracture location. Considerable graphite on fracture surface fell away from the matrix, that is to say, a crack appeared in the graphite and matrix interface. On the other hand, the percentage of fall out graphite was not so high in α-ADI, indicating the ferrite around the spheroidal graphite is effective in hydrogen embrittlement.
