This study was designed to investigate the conditions associated with wearing a hearing aid. Fifty hearing-impaired people participated in this study from January 2009 to September 2010. Thirty-four wore hearing aids, while sixteen did not. The subjects who wore a hearing aid showed a high hearing threshold on the side with the hearing aid, and there was a high rate of applications by these patients due the hearing-handicapped approval law that has been established in Japan. We evaluated the hearing efficiency of all patients subjectively with a questionnaire, the self-assessment scale for Japanese impaired, and evaluated their satisfaction with the hearing aid 1 month later. Although the percentage of subjects who could listen to a one-on-one conversation and hear the sound of a microwave was over 80 percent in the subjects who used hearing aids, that of subjects who could listen to a conversation involving several people was only 36 percent. No significant difference was found in the satisfaction after 1 and 3 months in 23 cases, and the median data of satisfaction with the hearing aid was 80. It is important for speech therapists and hearing instrument technicians to take an active role in the evaluation of hearing aid fitting, management of hearing, and wearing guidance along with otolaryngologists.
