This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of a two-dimensional photonic-crystal slab directional coupler with a coupling length of ∼31 μm. Coupling properties are discussed using the conventional coupled mode theory and band diagrams calculated by a mix of the plane-wave-expansion method and an effective refractive index. Due to the large group velocity dispersion in the presence of the photonic band gap, the coupling properties are shown to be significantly wavelength dependent. Calculated results were compared with experimental results by observing transmission spectra and intensity modulations attributable to optical interference under various experimental configurations. These indicated that the calculated results are in good agreement with observed results.
