We have demonstrated that the expected capacity increase from PPM to PWM recording channel can be fully realized in the next generation optical recording drives provided that the critical media characteristics are tightly controlled, and advanced read/write techniques are properly implemented in the channel. For future products with 10x and higher capacities, the media characteristics such as thermal sensitivities and groove noise must be greatly improved to retain the advantage of advanced recording techniques used in PWM or PAM channels. We have demonstrated that 10x capacity increase can be achieved with a PWM channel and short wavelength lasers if these improvements are made [1].
