Magnetic and magneto-optical properties have been investigated for Pd/Co multilayered films prepared by rf sputtering method. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films increases with decreasing bilayer period λ and with decreasing Co composition. The maximum value of the anisotropy K⊥ obtained is 3.8×106 erg/cc, where λ and Co composition are 11Å and 28 at%, respectively. The saturation magnetization increases as the λ decreases and approaches the same value as alloys. The Kerr spectra of the multilayered films and those of alloy films are alike in having a peak around the wavelength of 400 nm, and they become almost the same for λ<15Å. These results suggest that the perpendicular anisotropy results from compositionally modulated structures with interfacial alloying rather than sharp bilayer interfaces.
