The authors investigated which condition of the eyes was most suitable for recording the nystagmus by electronystagmograph when carrying out the caloric test by the irrigation of 30°C for 40 sec. according to Hallpike. Measurements were made with the eyes open, closed, and Frenzel's spectacles.
The results obtained were as follows.
1. The magnitude of nystagmic reaction, presented by the total amplitude, with the eyes open was less than a third of those of the two other conditions. Namely, the nystagmic reaction with the eyes open was too much suppressed to be adopted as the test condition.
2. The amplitude- and frequency- curve with the eyes closed revealed the remarkable fluctuation, which was thought to be attributed to a distortion of nystagmic reaction.
From these it was concluded that the condition with the eyes opened under Frenzel's spectacles without illuminating was most suitable.
