We reviewed the records of 56 patients with head and neck carcinoma initially treated at our clinic from April 1984 to June 1986. The study focused on the time between initial symptoms and initial examination in hospital and correlated this time period with the stage of the disease. There were 44 males and 12 females, most age 50 to 70 years old. Many of the patients were in advaced-stage carcinoma, although they visited us within 3 months after the appearance of subjective-symptoms. The tendency to seek treatment at a more advanced stage of the disease was marked in patients over 70 years old.<BR>It was suggested that more active steps be taken for early discovery and treatment of head and neck carcinoma.
