Tannic acid fixation method was used to evaluate the distribution of microtubules in the hair cells in the guinea pig. The microtubules were located both in the apical and bottom region of the cells. None of them was detectable in the middle region which occupies the greater part of the hair cell cytoplasm. The results indicate that in cochlear sensory cells microtubules are closely involved in the movement of ions and synaptic vesicles. The microtubules may be secondarily concerned in sensory transmission in the hair cells.
