Ten cases of the so-called spino-cerebellar degeneration were presented. The disease is regarded as typical infratentorial disturbance. The main features of the disease appear in the ataxia in eyes and extremities. Bilateral gaze nystagmus was seen in five cases, direction changing positional nystagmus in seven (apogeotropic nystagmus in six, and geotropic in one), and horizontal positional nystagmus in two, and vertical positioning nystagmus in seven.
Caloric response appeared normal in all cases. Optokinetic patterns showed wide variations: subnormal to entirely abnormal types, which are typical of these degenerative diseases. They showed atactic pursuit motion of eyes: dysmetric sacc des or combination of stepwise and dysmetric saccades.
In the pendular rotation test, eye deviation was large and irregular in the recordings with the closed eyes and the covered eyes as well. Spinal, spinocerebellar and cerebellar forms after Greenfield showed neurotological findings different from each other. In the last two of these three types, stactic eye movements and spontaneous nystagmus were more common and more pronounced than in the first, indicating that the brainstem as well as the cerebellum were extensively involved in this desease.
