Risk factors and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were studied. CMV disease was revealed significantly in seronegative children who were transfused with fresh whole blood and granulocytes. Meanwhile, CMV disease was not noticed in seropositive children. To prevent CMV disease, 200 mg/kg of CMV high titer gammaglobulin (CMV-IG) was administered every other week to five leukemic children who were susceptible to CMV disease. No cases showed CMV disease, though two of them had CMV infection. These results suggested that a risk factor of CMV disease in leukemic children was blood transfusion containing fresh white blood cells to seronegative children, and that periodic administration of CMV-IG might be effective to prevent CMV disease.
