A survey was performed to clarify the incidence and clinical characteristics of recurrent idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) of children. Questionnaires were sent to the hospitals participating in the Japanese Study Group on Childhood ITP Treatment. The incidence of recurrent ITP among total ITP was 3.0% in the 6 years from 1990 to 1995, based on the results reported from 35 hospitals. On the other hand, clinical aspects were analyzed in 30 cases reported from 17 hospitals in the 16 years from 1980 to 1995. We examined variable factors (sex, age, past and family histories, total occurrence counts, preceding infection, complication, therapy, and laboratory data), but significant clinical characteristics were not found in the recurrent ITP, compared with nonrecurrent acute ITP. Furthermore, no significant difference of clinical background or sign was observed between the ITP patients with one recurrence episode and those with multiple recurrence episodes. Therefore we concluded that it might be impossible to expect the possibility of recurrent ITP by evaluating clinical aspects of its first episode.
