A study of three-dimensional image display in the medical field has been developed by the application of advanced computergraphics and CAD/CAM. Three-dimensional display techniqes have a wide range of medical applications, of which preoperative planning is typical. In this study, we have developed a preoperative simulation system by applying three-dimensional image processing techniques. A variety of such techniques is necessary for preoperative simulation. In this case, we have developed a simulation system for bone-cutting and jointing and have applied it to the preoperative planning for the plastic surgery. Rapidity of processing is also essential, and this has been achieved by the employment of data compression techniques, based on run coordinate data.
