Fuzzy set was proposed by L. A. Zadeh as a new concept of sets. We extended this concept to multi-value logic to make fuzzy logic, which was applied to medical diagnosis. The feasibility of this logic is applied to medical diagnosis based on the fact that a disease is a fuzzy set composed of the elements of test results or answers to medical questionnaires, and that differential diagnoses made by medical doctors follow the pattern of multi-value logic.
The logic proposed here was applied to the estimation of prognosis in patients with heart diseases. The estimation was calculated from 9 test results. The estimation was also made by other theories such as discriminant analysis and analysis by quantification theory. The percentage of correct estimation was 57. 05% by analysis by quantification theory, 63. 8% by discriminant analysis and 77. 3% by our logic based on fuzzy logic.
We believe that this fact shows the fuzzy logic described here represents a good model of medical diagnosis.
