In order to determine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer, we observed behavior and posture of cows and swines.The results obtained are summarized as follows;1) The lying times of cows were about 500min/day and four patterns of lying posture were observed in cows in the stall.2) The ratio of bovine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area were almost consistent regardless of pattern of lying posture, and were around 67%.3) The ratios of bovine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area, when determined as a 24 hour-round, were between 84% and 93%. The relation between the 24 hour-ratio and bovine live weight is described by the following formula;Rc=100W/(0.892W+148)Rc: The 24 hour-ratio of bovine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area (%)Wc: live weight of cow (kg)4) Swines seemed to be in lying postures over 90% of nighttime and 82% of a day, irrespective of body weight.5) Swines showed six patterns of lying posture when they were lying separately from each other, while five patterns when they were lying in a huddle. The ratios of swine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area were around 75% in the former case. In the latter case, the ratios were between 46% and 64% for swines in the middle of the huddle while about 80% for ones on its outskirts.6) When Boon's Huddling Index is used, the 24 hour-ratio of swine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area can be calculated from the following formula;Rs=(62.8×HI+(1-HI)×77.5)×0.82+100×0.18Rs: The 24 hour-ratio of swine net body surface area concerned in mass transfer to the whole body surface area (%)HI: Huddling Index of Boon (1982)
