In Japan, oral surgeons without a medical license have been permitted to perform every kind of treatment for oral cancer including microsurgical tissue transfer and chemotherapy. The Japanese government has recently decided to change this situation, making oral surgeons cooperate with otolaryngologists and other medical specialists in oral cancer treatment. Otolaryngologists will therefore have much more occasions to work as a team with oral surgeons. In this cooperation, the best result will be obtained if otolaryngologists seek special techniques of oral surgeons, such as mandibular bone plastic surgery and osseo-integrated implants, and general and specialized dental procedures, such as oral hygiene and prosthodontics. We consider a otolaryngologist can be the best leader in a medical and dental team for oral cancer treatment. To make the treatment successful, the otolaryngologist must make every effort to obtain wider knowledge of oral surgery and other specialties including plastic surgery, radiation oncology, and medical oncology.
