In an effort to develop an advanced Cr-Mo steel required for increasing operation temperature and pressure in oil refinery and coal liquefaction, the effects of alloying elements on high temperature strength were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the effects of manufacturing process and chemical composition on high temperature strength were also examined with hot rolled Cr-Mo steel strip for the coilayer vessel, one of the multilayer vessels.The optimum chemical composition for the extra large thickness steel plate was 0.15C-3Cr-1Mo-0.25V-0.04Nb. The continuously hot rolled steel strip with the same composition showed 30kgf/mm2 of 105h creep rupture strength at 482°C even when the strip was subjected to the post weld heat treatment with 20.6×103 of tempering parameter.The maximum allowable stress at 482°C determined by ASME Section MIII Div. 1 was about 18kgf/mm2 which corresponds to 1.5 times as much as that of 21/4Cr-1 Mo steel.The strip Showed 26kgf/mm2 of 105h creep rupture strength at 482°C even when carbon content was decreased to 0.08 pct. and heating temperature before rolling was 1150°C.In spite of extra high strength as mentioned above, the strip indicated excellent toughness, less temper embrittlement, and as good resistance to hydrogen attack as that of 3Cr-1 Mo steel.
