High temperature strength of SiC whisker reinforced AC4A aluminum alloy composite, and the boundary strength between matrix part and composite part were examined. The composites were fabricated by melting infiltration method using a die-casting machine. High temperature strengths of composite and matrix parts were measured by 3-point bending test at 293K, 273K, 473K, 523K, 573K and 623K under as-cast conditions. The boundary strength was measured by 4-point bending test at room temperature after heat treatments at 293K, 373K, 473K, 573K and 623K for 3600 seconds in vacuum. The composite strength up to 473K is approximately 810MPa which is equal to 1.5 times of matrix strength, and even when the test temperature is increased to 623K from 473K, the composite strength is still held to be more than 500MPa. Up to a heat treatment temperature of 473K, the boundary strength, about 480MPa, is equal to a half of the composite strength and lower than the matrix strength by 25%. When the heat treatment temperature exceeds 473K, the boundary strength gradually decreases with increasing temperature. Every specimen failes at boundary between matrix and composite parts in bending tests for measuring boundary strength.
