The age-hardening process of Al-Mg-Si-(Sn) alloys was investigated by means of a tensile test. The kinetics of the age-hardening was analysed based on the activation energy. The results indicates that the age-hardening in Al-Mg-Si-(Sn) alloys is controlled by the migration of mobile magnesium-silicon-vacancy clusters, and the activation energy for the process varies from 0.7-1.1eV for the early stages of aging to 1.3-1.5eV for the later stages. Furthermore, the activation energy changes by addition of tin as well as excess silicon. The change in the activation energy is explained by assuming that the activation energy is affected by the concentration of quenched-in vacancies contained in magnesium-silicon clusters.
