Effects of Cl ion concentration, pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen on corrosion resistance of 5182 and 3004 alloys for can stocks in citric acid and sodium citrate solutions were investigated. Effects of temperature and dissolved oxygen were dominating. No localized corrosion was observed in the test at temperatures up to 25°C. Corrosion rate was greatly decreased by deaeration, while pitting corrosion occured in acidified oxygen saturated solution at temperatures higher than 40°C. Results of the immersion corrosion test agree with those of test pack and they were well understood in terms of electrochemical polarization characteristics.
