Effects of Si content 0.002 to 0.006% and of intermediate annealing temperature after hot rolling on grain coarsening of high purity aluminum plates cold rolled and armealed at 380°C were studied. Two types of recrystallized grain coarsening are observed. One occurs in aluminum secondary recrystallized by intermediate annealing at temperatures above 500°C and cold rolled at rolling reduction 80%. The other occurs in aluminum intermediately annealed at temperatures below 400°C particularly 200° to 300°C and cold rolled at rolling reductions 80% or more. This type of grain coarsening can bc prevented effectively by 0.006%Si in aluminum. Al-Si precipitates 0.1μm in size are found in aluminum intermediately annealed at 300°C. The grain coarsening is attributed to precipitation of Fe and Si by annealing at 200° to 300°C and to decreases of Fe and Si in solid solution.
