The effect of applied tensile stress and continuous strain on dissolution behavior of 5083 aluminum alloy was investigated in relation to the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility in the short transverse direction of the alloy. Stress corrosion cracking tests were carried out by means of constant strain rate techniques under various impressed anodic potentials.The critical potential over which stress corrosion cracking occurs can be expressed by using both the highest potential below which the surface oxide film is stable during holding for a certain time and stress dependent breakdown Potential Eb.
