Thermal expansion, tensile and fatigue tests were carried out on the castings having different structures. The coefficient of thermal expansion changes with temperature in a similar manner regardless of cast structures and of cooling rates. The castings having a columnar structure show a considerable anisotropic effect on tensile and fatigue properties regardless of cooling rates. This is attributed to the crystallographic orientation and geometry of grain boundaries. The castings having equi-axial crystals are free from anisotropy.
