Red mud containing sodalite reacts with ammonium bisulfate at 400°C to 450°C to form double salt of an ammonium aluminum sulfate soluble in water. Aluminum and iron were leached in water or in sulfuric acid after the sulfatizing roasting. A pH control process was examined to remove ferric ion in the leaching solution. The optimum conditions for removing ferric ion in the leaching solution are: temperature 90°C, pH3.5 and time 2 hours. The final recovery of aluminum can exceed 80% under these conditions.
