An aging process and its close relationship with dislocations in dilute Al-Zr alloys containing Zr up to the maximum solid solubility 0.28wt% at 660.5°C were examined mainly by electrical resistivity measurement. The residual resistivity of Zr in aluminum, 7755.10-9Ω•cm/at%Zr, and the tempcrature dependency of solid solubility of Zr in aluminum, c = 472.exp (-16100/RT) in at% were given as fundamental data. Both isothermal aging and step-annealing were pursued on 99.991%Al, Al-0.04wt%Zr and Al-0.28wt%Zr alloys. The precipitation course is subdivided into two regions; the initial one is preferential precipitation on dislocations rate-controlled by dislocation short circuit with activation energy of 15-20kcal/mol at lower temperatures, and the later one is homogeneous precipitation rate-controlled by volume diffusion with activation energy of 4050kcal/mol at higher temperatures. The former process in especially enhanced by plastic deformation and is important as a starting point of overall precipitation reaction.
