In attempts to obtain the basic information on the establishment of management techniques suitable for free-ranging Aigamo ducks in paddy fields, the present study was carried out to elucidate (1) the characteristics of three kinds of Aigamo ducklings-Crossbred ducks (Mallard X Khaki Campbell: F1), Indian Runner (IR) and Chinese native duck (CN) - in terms of their avoidance/approach responses (fear and tameness) to humans, and (2) the characteristics of <I>Aigamo</I> ducklings (Chinese native duck) under three different handling treatments - minimal handling (Control), rough handling, and gentle handling with imprinting and caressing - in relation to their behaviours in paddy fields and their influence on rice production. The flight distance to humans of CN was significantly longer than those of F1 and IR (P<0.05), however regular gentle handling with imprinting and caressing reduced fear of humans in <I>Aigamo</I> ducklings. Gently handled ducklings spent significantly longer time swimming around, foraging and preening than roughly handled ducklings (P<0.05) . Thus, gentle handling of ducklings not only elevated their adaptation to water via the increase in preening behaviour but also promoted swimming around and foraging behaviour when they were first brought into the paddy fields. Furthermore, gently handled ducklings showed no avoidance responses to humans and thus the time required for capture of these ducks was significantly shorter than the time required for control and roughly handled ducklings (P<0.05) . As for rice production, there were fewer damages to the rice plants in the paddy fields with gently handled ducklings, compared to the paddy fields with control ducklings (P<0.05) . However, there were no significant differences in rice yield among treat ments due to extremely fewer damages to the rice plants. These results indicated that gentle handling to <I>Aigamo</I> ducklings eased their fear against humans and gave a labor-saving effect on capture of the ducks. Additionally, it resulted in altered behaviour of the ducks and fewer damages to the rice plants in paddy fields.
