This study was conducted with goats and cattle to evaluate the palatability of tropical forage legume Aeschynomene americana L. introduced recently from Australia.
In the experiment 1, the dried feeds were prepared from Aeschynomene americana L. (cv. Glenn and cv. Lee) and Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb. (phasey bean; Pb) grown in the drained paddy field in 1999, and Tokara goats were used for palatability tests by the cafeteria method. In the experiment 2, the green feeds were prepared from Glenn, Pb and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Men. cv. KUROSENGOKU) grown in the upland field in 2000, Tokara goats and Japanese Black cattle were used for palatability tests by the cafeteria method. In the experiment 3, the silages were prepared from Glenn and Pb grown in the upland field in 2000, Japanese Black cattle were used for palatability tests by the cafeteria method.
Tannin content values of the material plants in this study were lower (under 4.0mg/g DM) than those of plants of lower palatability that had been reported in other studies. In the experiment 1 with goats, dried Glenn and Lee showed higher dry matter intake (P <0. 05) than that of Pb. In the experiment 2 with goats and cattle, the dry matter intake of green Glenn was as high as that of soybean. In the experiment 3 with cattle, the silage made from Glenn showed slightly higher dry matter intake, compared with that of Pb.
These results suggested that Aeschynomene americana L. had the similar palatability to commercial variety of soiling forage soybean when fed to goats and cattle.
