To improve the yield and quality of the herbage in winter cultivation, we investigated the mixed culture using extremely early maturing and blast disease resistant Italian ryegrass with oat under the late summer sowing from September 2000 to March 2001.<BR>Two Italian ryegrass varieties (cv. Minamiaoba and Yamakei No. 31 strain) and oat (cv. Superhayate "Hayabusa") were sown in the sole or mixed culture of Italian ryegrass with oat on September 5, 2000. Plants were harvested in early November, middle January and late March in each plot. The plant characters examined in each plot were the degree of blast susceptibility, tiller number, heading tiller number, dry matter yield, <I>in vitro</I> dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and crude protein (CP) content of the herbage.<BR>The degree of blast susceptibility in single culture was smaller in Yamakei No. 31 strain than in Minamiaoba and the dead plants by the infection of blast disease were not observed in Yamakei No. 31 strain plot. Because of smaller damage by blast disease in Yamakei No. 31 strain than in Minamiaoba, the ratio of Italian ryegrass in the herbage during the cultivation was higher in the mixed sown plot of Yamakei No. 31 strain than in that of Minamiaoba. The CP content and IVDMD in the herbage before wintering also tended to be high in the former plot. The dry matter yield, CP yield and <I>in vitro</I> digestible dry matter yield in the mixed culture of Yamakei No.31 strain with oat were higher in the herbage before wintering than those of the single culture of Yamakei No. 31 strain by 74%, 29% and 47%, respectively.<BR>Therefore, because of strong blast resistance in Yamakei No. 31 strain, it is possible to sow the seed of this strain in late summer soon after harvesting maize, and mixed culture of Yamakei No. 31 strain with oat is expected to improve dry matter yield as well as nutritive value in the herbage before wintering and in total of three cuts from that of the present cultivar, Minamiaoba by 30% of total dry matter yield. From these results, a new cultivation system may be proposed for the winter herbage production in Nagasaki prefecture.
