Using the least square mean analysis, the effects of feeding low-protein diets supplemented with amino acids (AA) according to ideal protein (IP) on meat production were estimated. In 1995 and 1996, thirty eight pigs were fed the diets with different crude protein (CP) and digestible energy (DE) levels for reduction in nitrogen excretion during growing (40-70kg body weight) and finishing (70-105kg body weight) periods. In growing period, the 4 types of diets; a reduced CP diet (LCP), a AAsupplemented LCP diet (LCP+AA), a diet containing the standard CP levels (SCP) and a AA-supplemented SCP diet (SCP+lysine) were examined and the DE of them was3.38Mcal/kg air-dried diet. In finishing period, a AA-supplemented LCP diet with3.18 Mcal/kg DE {LCP (LDE) +AA} were examined in addition to LCP, LCP+AA and SCP. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) The reduction rates of nitrogen excretion in LCP+AA as compared with that in SCP was37.2%. 2) Growth rates of pigs fed the tested diets were similar, but side fat thickness (P 2) of pigs fed LCP+AA increased as compared with that of the pigs fed SCP through the tested period. 3) P 2 levels of slaughtered pigs tended to be lower as the ratio of lysine to DE in the diets decreased, and P 2 of the pigs fed SCP+lysine during the growing period was thinner than that of pigs fed SCP, in which the content of lysine, however, exceeded the recommended level of lysine by the Japanese Feeding Standard for Swine (1993) . These results suggest that the feeding on the basis of protein gain in pigs is important.
