A study was made to examine the usefulness of Leucaena silages with varying levels of added molasses for animal feeding. For this purpose, we investigated the decomposition of mimosine and the production of organic acids. The results obtained are as follows. When silage of the vegetative parts of Leucaena was prepared without the addition of molasses, the pH value of the resulting silage decreased slowly and the production of organic acids was very low during storage, so that the quality of the silage was not acceptable for animals. However, when molasses was added to the silage in amount of 10% and 15%, the pH value of 10% molasses added silage decreased from 6.3-4.0 during 21 days' storage, and in the case of 15% molasses added silage PH value was reached to the same level within 14 days' storage. The content of organic acids in the both groups was increased to abdout 3.4% during 14-21 days' storage, and then the level of the organic acids remained constant up to 70 days. The quality of the silages with 10-15X level of added molasses was preferable for animal feeding. Mimosine content both in control and molasses added silages was rapidly reduced during the early period of fermantation during 7 days' storage and then reached to almost 10% of the original level during prolonged storage.<BR>On the basis of these results, it is suggested that the utilization of pellets made from silage with molasses are promising procedure in eatablishing the efficient utilization of Leucaena for animal feeding.
