The increasing integration density and the multiplying function of LSI chips today require its packages to have smaller dimensions and increasing number of pins. PGA (Pin Grid Array) products were conceived to meet these requirements, but their cost is still high. The reason is that they require three successive processing stages, namely drilling, plating of through-hole and inserting pin. In view of this we have developed a new processing technique for print circuit boards-called Vibro-Punched Pin Inserting-which is a derivation of Vibro-Punching. It consists of reciprocating half-blanking process by which concentrated thermal energy is used to soften the resin, cut its fiber, and finally to insert the pins. This process can be used to insert pins with a diameter of 0.45 mm into printed circuit boards 1.0 mm in thickness within 3 seconds. The pull -strength of the inserted pins is constant and greater than 70N, while the push-strength is greater than 50N. The fiber surrounding the inserted pins present directional properties.
