Trace element determinations for the reservoir (Lake Tsukui), sampled monthly during September 1996 to May 1997, were performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) . Major cation, anion, electric conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) were determined as well. Most of the elements and other parameters such as water temperature were uniformly distributed in both vertical and lateral directions at the same sampling date, indicating that the lake water was well mixed. On the other hand, there were lateral and vertical variations for PO4 on February 97 and vertical variations for DO, Mn, Co and W on May 97. These variations may be caused by biological activities of either bacteria or phytoplankton and succeedingly occurred dissolution of the elements from the sediment. Tungsten release was supported by a simulation experiment under anaerobic condition. On the contrary, significant monthly variations were observed for many elements. Those observations suggest 1) time scale of water exchange of the lake Tc is less than one month, 2) time scale of water mixing in lateral direction Tl is less than Tc, 3) time scale of water mixing in vertical direction Tv is less than Tl and Tv, is estimated between 24 and 96 hours by simulation (in summer), 4) time scale of biological activity and elements release from sediment, Tb and Tr are less than Tv.
